I occasionally visit a blog by Trevor Marshall who is modelling a Canadian branch line in S Scale called Port Rowan.
This post is not about his layout but I present this recent post with his thoughts on a possible direction to keep the hobby from dying away.
Trevor's post is based on a speech he gave recently at a convention and I ask you to have a read and to also read the comments at the end of his post, thought provoking, I believe he may be onto something.

Very interesting Ray. Thanks for sharing Trevor's blog. I have to admit it was not trains that got me. It was more the amazement in how they worked and how precise they looked. I think anyone interested in how things work can find themselves interested in this hobby. It just has so many engineering facets.

A very interesting read, Ray. Thanks for the link. The most significant aspect is how to engage initially. Once the bait is taken, I'd wager the target audience would be well hooked.
The issue then is - how long before they finish digesting the bait? There is reputed to be a very short attention span among these individuals.

Thanks for the shout-out! I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. I'm considering ways to expand upon this topic. I spoke for the better part of an hour and obviously I've distilled that into a few points for my blog posting. There's much to add.
