Wollar Loco Shed - The next stage

While working on ideas for the lighting of the loco shed I had been pondering the construction of the smoke flues that sit above the end of the tracks to direct the smoke from the locos up and out of the shed.

I spent a few hours over the weekend building the smoke flues from Evergreen strip and scribed styrene.

The flues turned out to only be a small challenge and not as bad as I had been dreading.

Mounting them in the rafters was tricky however as the plan in Byways 7 shows the flues suspended between two trusses at around 6' apart but the kit rafters are 8' 6" apart. Without a full plan it is hard to know if the kit has the right number of rafters or if the Broken Hill shed in Byways 7 is simply a variation to the shed modelled in the kit.

Here are two views of the flues, one from the front and another through the rear windows.

Front view

View through rear windows

Being white and close with a lot of other framing running in all directions they were difficult to get the camera to focus on but I think you get the idea.
I needed to do the flues before the suspended lights as the lights will be very prone to damage and if bent will probably short out the LEDs due to conductive silver paint method I will use as per my previous post for the street lamp.
As can be seen from both photos I have yet to extend the tracks in the shed, I will probably leave this until the shed is finished as I also have to work out a plug and socket method of getting power to the shed LED lighting as the shed will be removable.

The kit as supplied has the floor and track bed built as a solid part of the shed which is good for track alignment with the turntable but it also means that a method has to be worked out if you want to get access into the shed. I think it would be best not to glue the floor to the walls which would make it very tricky when first starting to build the shed until the frame gets sufficiently cross braced to gain some strength. Tell me how I know this   ;-)

The next step will be to spray all the trusses, frames smoke flues, etc. prior to fixing the lights.

found this. Forgot that i had it. A generic diagram for NSWR roundhouses. There is a second part which shows the layout and angle of tracks and turntable roads. Will upload it too when i find it.

Do you have a higher resolution version as it is hard to read dimensions, etc.
Great find though.

yeah just found that. adjusted it so that it wasn't 17mb and then flickr has gone and made it all illegible. stay tuned will keep working on it.

Ray I have tried to look at the photo ling James shows but cannot get to the page, getting the usual error message

There are some various types of diagrams around, including ones in a blue book of station diagrams as well as one from Datasheets, which tend to show the raised mid section types rather than the saw tooth. The spacings & angles as I mentioned in one of your first posts on the RH, is how the turntables were set, & not all had the same angle depending on the turntable size.

I spoke to Anton early on about this, so I have no idea on what he has based it all on. I know he also has an internal floor with pits designed to go with the roundhouse.

I started on a roundhouse some time ago based on the Datasheets plan, & after two attempts, it was put aside, & then broken up with the pending move. I am still wondering how to go about it when it comes to the next incarnation.

RE the light again, I would not think the full amount of lights that were in roundhouses would be needed, as it could show up too much light inside.

The night photo I thought of for BMD is found in the garratt book on Page 156. There is another inside shed photo of BX that also shows the lighting up as well, even though its a straight shed.

mone your mouse over it and select the middle icon (Zoom) in the top right corner. then save the image (1.3mb) and view with all dimensions visible

same as before save the zoomed in image and all dimensions show up. This is for a shed with a 75foot table. Note the "temporary wall" of which Cowra still retains for the never built expansion of the Depot over roads 9 & 10 and beyond.

Excellent!
Thank you.
The plans are going to be a lot of help in placing the benches, lockers, etc.
This project is growing and I will have to know when to stop.
Do you mind if I post the plan links to the main page as some may not read the comments and I think that anyone building the kit should have a little help as the instructions are not great?

please do post the link, only too glad to help. I had planned on doing a roundhouse kit based on that drawing but it just never eventuated. You mentioned previous some issues with road lengths/ angles. I'd like to know if the kit produced is for a shed with a 60ft table or a 75 as shown? size of table vs size of shed equals different angles me thinks

Now with 40 detail photos of Cowra Roundhose circa 2005. Can't find a shot of against the temporary wall.
Enjoy

The kit is designed to go with Anton's 75' turntable.
My problem was that I installed it several years ago and I didn't have enough room for the required distances to the start of the shed and to the end of the tracks. As a result I had to play with the shed door openings a little so that I could bring the shed about 10' closer to the turntable.
If someone bought the turntable and the shed at the same time and had the room then everything should be OK.
Thanks for the link to the photos, I will check them out tonight and probably do a post with your plan links.
